DIY Weighted Swimbait Hooks

I’ve been working on my larger 6″ Swimbait again and needed some hooks for testing but I couldn’t find weighted swimbait hooks locally in the size I needed.

I was able for find these 8/0 Owner Beast Hooks that should do the trick I guess I just need to add some weight to them myself.

I took a picture of one of the hooks and imported it into Fusion 360 to make a weight mold around the hook.

The design was pretty simple and only took like 10 minutes to do.

It took just under 2 hours to print at 100% infill. I don’t expect this PLA mold to last more than one pour with lead but I just need one hook for testing purposes at this point.

This is how the hook will be sandwiched in the mold to form the weight around the hook.

The mold is then secured in a vise.

At this point the lead has just reached it’s melting point and I’m ready to try a pour.

There’s no smoke or fire at this point so fingers crossed.

It actually worked but as expected the mold did melt and had to be pried apart.

This is the aftermath of the mold after the first pour.  I think I might be able to get another one out of it…

The second one (top) did not come out as well as the first but I was only expecting to get one out of the mold so this is a bonus.

Here is the mold after the second pour… it’s pretty much destroyed at this point.

Here are the cleaned up hooks ready for testing. If these work out well I will make the next mold out of silicone so it will actually last longer then two pours.

Rigged and ready… now I just need to get them in the water to test out. I’m just waiting on a new pole so as with most of my stuff….. to be continued.

  1. Greetings, it would be nice if you put the mold up for sale. I print the lead molds in clear standard resin from the Anycubic brand, and although there are brands with high-temperature resins, these are a bit expensive, what I do is spread with oil the parts of the mold that are going to be in contact with the lead, and thus the thermal shock is largely avoided.

Sorry if something written is not well understood, use the google translator.

    1. Yeah.. I’ve done a few versions of my molds for people to pour lead directly into resins mold and it seems to work great. Thanks for the tip on the oil I have not thought about trying that. This particular mold is specifically designed around the beast hook I used but if you want it just drop me an email and I’ll send it to you as I have not uploaded it anywhere yet.
