3D Printed Hubless Fly Reel

This is a 3D Printed Hubless Fly Reel that I am currently working on.  This is just a place holder page right now more info will eventually be added after I work out the kinks in this design.

It’s a large fly reel with a 4″ diameter but it might work for large fish like bass.

    1. My first design of this was around 4.75″ in overall diameter but it looked big to me so ended up scaling it down… so I’m sure it could be scaled up too. I’m still working on the design though to make it smoother but it’s on the back burner at the moment while I work on other projects.

      1. Sorry they are not available right now. It is an unfinished project at the moment and I will only release the files once it is done.

    1. Sorry none yet… this hasn’t made it back to the top of my To-Do list yet but now that fishing season is here again it will be moving toward the top again soon.

      1. Hi! I have a question on the design. Do you make use of 2 rubber rings on the shaft of the frame such that the spool spins around the rubber rings? I noticed that is the design used for some hubless fly reels.

        1. No, but that’s a good idea and might actually work as a drag system too… I’ll have to look into that. Right now it basically just plastic on plastic but I though about incorporating a bearing into the design out of airsoft BB’s so it spins better.

  1. I was wondering if you had any updates on this? I just got a makerbot, and am looking for reels to test it with. I would be willing to play with an incomplete design, if you were OK with that.

    1. I haven’t had a chance to work on this in awhile. It’s really not in a workable enough state to release right now. I do have other printable fly reels that do work though.

  2. Hi. I’ve been thinking about something similar. I had planned to use magnets to handle the click pawl system. As far as drags go, considering that plastic probably won’t stand up to a big fish running, I wouldn’t worry about it. If want a compromise add a lip that protrudes out off the spool so you can use your palm to add a little drag. Medalist RC series reels have the flared rim if you want to see a good example

    1. The magnets sound like a good idea. I did incorporate the edge of the otter spool into the drag idea so I could palm it if necessary… which I’ll probably never have to do because I don’t catch big fish. LOL
