Rooster Tail Spinner

This was just a quick little project I came up with one night to make something different. I had some spinner blades left over so I figured it would be a fun thing to try and machine up some parts to make a rooster tail spinners. This is a quick run down of how I did things.

I started with a few scrap pieces of metal I had laying around.

For the first one I started by drilling a 1/16″ hole into the aluminum stock.

I then used a bigger bit to concave the back of the piece.

After that I turned the piece down to about a .25″ diameter.

I then cut in some details and tapered the nose before parting off the work piece.

I also turned up a little front section piece.

The blade is not your typical rooster tail blade but it’s what I had laying around. I bent a piece of safety wire up to make the swivel part. (This was the hardest part of the whole project.)

A quick loop on the rear of some more safety wire and assembly could begin.

Then is was just a matter of stacking on the various pieces. I had the brass bead left over from the Whopper Plopper projects.

Then I had to form one more loop up front to finish off the main part of the lure. After that it was time to dress a hook.

Here is the first finished spinner… after adding some paint. It’s not the prettiest spinner but it should do the trick.

For the brass version I added some blue nail polish to the grooves before giving it a final turn down to size.  I also used thicker pre-bent wire on this one too. (the last one wasn’t stiff enough)

For the blade swivel on this one I tried to make it by bending up a split washer… it’s a little ugly but should work.  (Again this was the hardest part to make pre-made bought swivels parts would be the way to go here.)

I dressed up the hook with a black and green pattern on this one.

Overall they came out pretty well. I tested the red one at a trout stream by my work and I did get a few hits but no solid hookups.  I always have a hell of a time trying to catch trout.  The red one was is about half as light as the brass one so I think the brass one will actual work better. I’ll find out soon…..
